Are you unemployed and looking for your next opportunity? Are you unhappy at work and trying to find a better job? Are you getting frustrated with the tough market out there?

In these challenging economic times, there’s been unprecedented downsizing in the tech industry. This recent wave of worldwide layoffs is due to the economic downturn, corporate restructuring, and shifting market demands.

In my role as a Performance Coach at Toast, I do group coaching sessions with women in tech. Finding a job is a common coaching topic. In my 1 on 1 coaching practice, many of my clients are unhappy at work and looking for their next opportunity.

So how can you land your next dream job?

✅ Check out my top ten job search tips:

  1. Network: in the world of work, it’s always about who you know. Attend virtual and in-person networking events to build relationships and to grow your connections. Networking also keeps you current with what’s happening in the industry.
  2. Leverage LinkedIn: optimize your LinkedIn profile and actively engage with relevant groups and professionals. Share your expertise, contribute to discussions, and build relationships that may lead to new opportunities.
  3. Book informational interviews: reach out to industry professionals for informational interviews. These conversations can provide valuable insights, guidance, and potential referrals.
  4. Participate in online communities: engage with online tech communities and forums to connect with like-minded professionals, share knowledge, and explore new opportunities.
  5. Try volunteering: consider offering your skills and expertise on a voluntary basis to expand your network to commit to continuous learning and growth.
  6. Upskill: enhance your skills and knowledge. Explore online courses, certifications, and resources to keep up with the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
  7. Do your homework: research the company you are applying to so you can understand the work it does and its organizational structure. Get a feel for its values to see if they match yours. Check out the profiles of its employees, managers, and executive team.
  8. Dress for success: wear the appropriate business attire for all interviews.
  9. Ask questions: you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. Prepare a list of questions to ask in advance of all interviews. This shows interest and proves that you have done your homework.
  10. Differentiate yourself: highlight some non-technical aspects of yourself on your resume, or in an interview to stand out. What are your hobbies and soft skills?

But what if you have been searching for a long time? How can you stay motivated to keep going?

I recommend that you celebrate 🥳 your wins along the way. The interviews you’ve had, the people you’ve talked to, and the new skills you’ve learned. Rejection means that you are putting yourself out there, and that’s worth celebrating.

😍 Treat yourself with kindness and compassion as you navigate your job search journey. This will give you the resilience to keep trying. Give yourself permission to fail. And reframe failure as feedback.

It’s a tough job market out there, but you will end up where you are meant to be ❤️
