Optimism, the ability to remain positive despite setbacks, is an important Emotional Intelligence skill that helps you thrive at work and at home. Optimism gives you the resilience to keep going during challenging times and is key to motivating and inspiring your colleagues. A positive mindset reduces stress, enhances your well-being, and strengthens your social relationships.
Many of my clients have lower scores in optimism on the scientifically validated EQi-2.0 assessment before they start working with me. Research consistently underscores the profound connection between optimism and happiness.
How optimistic are you?
😃 Being optimistic is a choice. You can choose any perspective for any situation you face. One of my women in tech clients is working on being very intentional about reframing negative experiences in a positive light. For example, on a recent holiday trip out of town, she got sick and had to attend urgent care. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she came home feeling empowered and confident in her ability to successfully navigate a foreign medical system on her own.
How can you put a positive spin on a challenge you are going through right now?

Take a moment each day to reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Cultivating gratitude can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant.
➕ Use positive affirmations.
Consciously replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Speak kindly to yourself, affirming your capabilities and strengths.
🧘🏽♀️ Meditate.
Engage in mindfulness practices to stay present and to cultivate a sense of calm. Meditation can help train your mind to see beyond immediate challenges and focus on the bigger picture.
🗓️ Set realistic goals.
Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate each milestone, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reinforcing a positive outlook.
🔭 Visualize success.
Visualize success in your work and personal life. What does success look like to you? By picturing success in your mind, you shift your thought patterns. This change in mentality can affect your habits and actions and can ultimately lead to higher levels of accomplishment.
🫂 Enhance relationships.
Creating rapport with colleagues and friends can foster a positive mindset that permeates your life. Praising your co-workers for their accomplishments cultivates an optimistic and encouraging work atmosphere. Invest time into your social relationships to boost your positivity.
While increasing your optimism is beneficial, it’s crucial to distinguish it from TOXIC positivity 🛑Optimism involves acknowledging and processing negative emotions, whereas toxic positivity dismisses or invalidates genuine feelings of distress. Striking a balance is key—embracing optimism without suppressing the full spectrum of human emotions.
