Have you recently transitioned to a new role? Are you determined to exceed expectations? What can you do in the first ninety days to set yourself up for success?
Your employer has ninety days to assess your capabilities and appropriateness for the job. During this probationary period, they can terminate you for any reason without notice or severance. In some cases, certain benefits also kick in after probation.
In my role as COO/Head of HR at RYCOR, I used the probationary period to assess cultural fit and competence.
On one occasion, I had to let someone go on the last day of their probation. Most of the team were away on a retreat, and this individual was left in charge. It did not go well. We also learned more about her lack of fit with the team while we were away. I felt terrible terminating her employment so close to the end of her probationary period, but it took us that long to assess fit. As hard as it was, I had to do what was best for my company.
How can you ensure that you pass probation and thrive in your new role?
According to Michael D. Watkins, in his groundbreaking book, “The First 90 Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter”, the first 90 days in a new role can make or break your success. You need to take proactive, strategic action during this time because this is when you have the greatest opportunity to establish credibility, build relationships, and set a trajectory for success.
Watkins’ Transition Framework consists of three core phases:
1️⃣ Prepare: understand the situation, assess the challenges and opportunities, and formulate a strategic plan. Key tasks include clarifying goals, gathering information, and building relationships with key stakeholders.
2️⃣ Accelerate: implement the plan and get quick wins. Prioritizing actions, build momentum, and navigate through early challenges effectively.
3️⃣ Sustain: solidify your progress, reinforce change, and ensure long-term success. Embed new processes, sustain momentum, and continue to build relationships and credibility.
What strategies work best for you when getting up to speed at a new job? Check out these tips:
