How many hours a day do you spend on your phone? Does the time fly by as you endlessly scroll social media? Do you struggle to stay present with your loved ones because you keep checking your phone?
💡 I recently read Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport, and it offers an eye-opening look at how intentional tech use can transform your life. A business friend of mine said this book “gave me my life back,” and I can understand why.
🎯 The power of intentional use
Choosing rather than passively consuming technology. Think of your phone as a tool you control rather than a device controlling you. Decide which apps genuinely add value and discard those that don’t.
🤫 The value of solitude
Solitude is essential for self-reflection and creativity. By constantly engaging with your devices, you deprive yourself of this necessary quiet. Build in more moments of solitude—even if it’s just a few minutes without your phone.
🤗 Rediscovering real-life connection
In a time when we’re more digitally connected than ever, many of us are missing out on genuine face-to-face interactions. Reduce digital communication in favor of real-life experiences and conversations.
My own digital breaks 📵
Inspired by these ideas, I’ve started taking phone breaks when I’m with my kids and leaving my phone behind when I go for walks by the lake. These intentional breaks not only let me focus more on my time with them, but they also remind me of the simple joys of being fully present.
I’ve found that these breaks give me energy, deepen my connection to my self and my kids, and make me more mindful of when and how I use my phone.
Tips to limit your phone use:
If you’re interested in trying out digital minimalism, here are a few tips that have helped me:
đźš« Set boundaries for screen time: schedule tech-free times, like the first and last hours of your day. Consider using app limits to stay on track.
🗓️ Batch your notifications: instead of letting notifications disrupt your day, check them at set times.
🔕 Turn off non-essential notifications: let go of anything that pulls you in unnecessarily and only keep the alerts that truly matter.
📵 Create phone-free zones: designate areas in your home (like the bedroom or dining table) as phone-free to encourage more focused, in-the-moment living.
So, how many hours a day do you spend on your phone? It’s a tough question, but it’s the first step in building a more mindful, intentional relationship with technology.
