Last weekend, I watched my 72-year-old Dad tube slide down a hill at a family wedding in the UK.
🛝 No hesitation. No worrying about what anyone thought. Just pure, unfiltered joy. The same way he’s shown up my whole life.
Growing up, he was always the big kid at every event. Now I watch him bring that same energy to my own children, and it hit me: he’s never once performed a version of himself. He’s just always been him.
🔥 That’s authentic leadership, long before I had a name for it.
We spend so much energy in leadership roles managing perception and being “on,” filtering what we say and softening who we are to fit the room. But the leaders people actually follow, the ones who build real trust and loyalty, are the ones who show up as themselves. Consistently. Even when it’s not polished. Even when it means being the “big kid” in a room of adults.
My Dad walks daily, eats well, and stays true to who he is. And it shows. He’s proof that authenticity isn’t a personality trait you’re born with. It’s a practice. Something you protect and reinforce, day after day, the same way you’d protect your health.
This weekend also reminded me how easy it is to let busy-ness crowd out the things and people that matter most. I haven’t spent real time with my dad in his home country since I was 9. That’s changing. Because presence, not perfection, is what people remember about you ❤️
This Saturday, September 19, 2026, I’m running my next Authentic Leadership In-Person Workshop in Vancouver for leaders ready to stop performing and start leading as their real, unfiltered selves. If you’re local and any part of this story resonated, this session is for you.
(Vancouver-based readers — this one’s for you. Not local? Reply to coaching@annagradie.com and let me know if you’d want a future virtual version.)
