More and more in-person events and experiences are available to you now. This is a reason to celebrate, but the cost is that some of us are feeling overwhelmed with our lives as we take on too much again.
A common theme in my coaching this week has been women feeling overwhelmed by jugging so many competing priorities.
How do you set those boundaries and organize your schedule, so you can make time for what matters the most and avoid slipping into the pre-pandemic levels of burnout? This situation is exacerbated by the external and internal pressures women put on ourselves to strive for perfection in all domains of our lives.
When I was building my software company while raising two small children, I was in a constant state of overwhelm. I wanted to be the perfect wife and mother, excel in my COO role, always look perfect, keep a spotless home, and still have time for my friends. But there just weren’t enough hours in the day. I was left feeling like a failure when I couldn’t achieve these unattainable goals I set for myself.
You can’t be 10 out of 10 in every domain of your life! Something has to give. You need to be ok with being a 6 in some areas.
Prioritization Exercise
Grab a notebook and make a list of all the domains in your life. Mine are: children, exercising, eating well, coaching business, recreation & hobbies, romantic relationship, friendship, making a contribution to society, and housework.
Choose which three domains are the most important for you to invest in. Strive to be a 10 in these areas, knowing that these priorities may change over time.
Assign a 6 to all the other domains. We need to learn to be satisfied with having a lower standard in some spheres of our lives.
As women, we want to have it all, but we will never win in the race towards perfection. Focus on what truly matters to you in your life and accept that saying yes to those things means saying “no” to some of your lower priorities.
What can you say “no” to?
I hope this exercise was helpful.
